FAQs from the Briarpatch
-
Marbling refers to the amount of fat. Fat content is a high contributor to taste and the cooking effect of the beef.
-
We take animal husbandry very seriously. Our steers are responsibly raised with no added hormones. They are raised on grass and supplemented with a small amount of grain until they are put in the finishing lot. This process increases the marbling, therefore giving the buyer a more tasteful experience.
-
Our Black Angus cattle spend their lives grazing on open pasture at Briarpatch Farm. As they transition to the finishing lot, they are provided with full feed, a process that enhances marbling and delivers rich, tender, and flavor-packed beef—elevating every bite to a truly exceptional experience.

Briarpatch Farm is located at 725 Pea Ridge Road, Eatonton, Georgia in Putnam County, Georgia and is part of Georgia’s Lake Country. Our farm proudly serves local families as well as customers who travel from across Georgia to purchase responsibly raised Black Angus beef.
-
Black Angus cattle are known for producing flavorful, well-marbled beef. At Briarpatch Farm, our cattle are raised on open pasture and grain finished to enhance flavor and tenderness, creating beef that is rich, satisfying, and perfect for family meals.
-
Our cattle are dry aged for approximately 12 days in the cooler, before actually cutting the beef. This allows the enzymes in the meat to break down the proteins and improve the tenderness and flavors.
-
A side is a half of a steer.
-
There is some loss from the hanging weight to final packaged weight due to bone/fat loss and the aging process. The amount of that loss can vary depending on whether a lot of your cuts are boneless or not but generally about 30% loss is normal.
-
There are many different ways to have your side of beef cut and you get to choose. If you are not familiar with all the cuts available, our processor will walk you through this.
-
Each beef box and bulk beef option includes specific cuts that are listed in the product description on our website. This allows customers to see exactly what they will receive before placing an order.
-
Reserve your side by going to the “Bulk Beef” tab. From that screen, you can make your selections and once the form is submitted, we will contact you. When the steer goes to the processor, we will let you know. The processor will contact you about cutting instructions. Remember, it takes about 14-18 days from the time a steer goes to the processor until you can pick up your beef.
-
You will need approximately 6-7 cu. ft. of freezer space to hold a side of beef. Generally, a side is 6-7 brown grocery bags full of meat.
-
Bulk beef reservations begin by submitting the bulk beef inquiry form on our website. Once the form is received, Mike or Jill will contact you to discuss availability and estimated wait time.
-
If you are traveling from outside the local area, we recommend bringing a cooler with freezer packs to keep your beef cold during transport.
-
Buying beef directly from a local farm allows families to know where their food comes from and how it was raised. At Briarpatch Farm, our cattle are responsibly raised on open pasture with no added hormones, giving customers confidence in the quality of the beef they bring home to their families.
